Superhero Art Capes- Figment Creative Labs

Kid's capes, superhero cape diy, art project, Figment Creative Labs, Austin TX, Superhero party, craft,

I set up a few art tables at a friend’s son’s birthday party last weekend. He wanted a Super Why theme (you know, the PBS show where the superheroes read).  I set up one craft table where the kids made superhero wrist cuffs using toilet paper rolls, one with masks, a cape making table, and we also made alphabet slime.  I would love to share the cape craft with you.

What we used:

I first learned about these drop clothes being amazing (and cheap) canvases from Meri Cherry- http://www.mericherry.com/2016/01/24/jackson-pollack-art-mural-for-kids/ They are fantastic since they are absorbent on one side, and smooth plastic on the other side.  The absorbent side is the side you decorate.  The paint does not seep through.

I prepped all the capes before hand.  I cut one measured to fit my son, then used that one as a stencil to create the others.  (Drawing on the smooth side with the grey marker.)  They can always be cut shorter later on to fit.  I attached the velcro squares as clasps to connect around the neck.

At the party I set out the capes with an assortment of materials to decorate them with. I asked each child what their name was and gave them an adhesive letter for them to put on the cape.

Birthday Boy

This little boy worked extra hard on his cape and just look at the outcome.  The colors blended amazingly!

I hope your little superheroes enjoy making their own art cape!
