Imagine my excitement when a little girl named Willa asked for a Frida Kahlo art birthday party. What fun! In case you are not familiar with Frida Kahlo, she was a Mexican painter that is remembered for her self-portraits, her pain, being married to artist Diego Rivera, and was a feminist. Willa was Frida for Halloween this year. I would like to share some of the Frida inspired projects and activities we did at the party.
I made floral headbands for everyone. Frida is well know for floral head dressing and her unibrow. I was planning on letting the kids make headbands, but once I stared playing around with them, I realized this would be a good project to knock out ahead of time. I pulled the ends off of artificial flowers and hot glued them to black headbands that I found at Hobby Lobby. I placed them at the entrance to the party so the kids could dress the part. I hung a tropical backdrop to take photos in front of.
I always have a large canvas for the the party to paint. The birthday boy or girl takes the collaborative piece home, to remember the special day.
The birthday girl suggested we make Frida dolls, so we made wooden peg dolls. We used Sharpie markers which made it mess free and easier to make small details. It was fun to see how different everyone’s dolls were.
Since Frida was big on bright colors and big beautiful necklaces, we made some.
I made animal beads using these Bright Babies Nature Tube plastic animals.
They are awesome y’all. So bright and fun! I drilled a hole through some of them making it easy to string plastic craft lace through.
They worked great, but I thought the animal beads would hang better if I screwed 9/16″ screw eyes in them.
FUN right?
Guess what the secret ingredient that really made it was?
Did you know that they made these? Mind blown. POM POM BEADS!
If you plan on having an art party, I suggest you make it a Frida Art party!
OH, it was raining so we painted clear umbrellas with tempera paint. It was a great space experiment for the painter and the person inside of the canvas.
