Bringing in the new year is partially celebrating last year’s growth and accomplishments, while looking to the next with positive wishes or intent. Since tomorrow marks a new year, today’s Wee Warhols class focused on just that. We made life size self portraits that showed our growth or stats (weight and height). I traced each child on large drawing paper. They stayed surprisingly still. Usually there is a ticklish one in the bunch, which sets them all off laughing. This group of Wee Warhols were very serious about this project;) I set out various materials for them to choose from and they got right to work. I didn’t give them any direction, I just let them go for it. To be honest, that was partially because I was so busy tracing the rest of the class, but I like for them to express themselves freely. They are the artists. I just provide the materials, maybe an idea, and a safe place for them to create.
I asked each of the children a few questions like:
- What was the most exciting thing that happened in your life this year?
- What is your wish for this coming year?
- What are you most thankful for that happened this past year…. Stuff like that.
As usual it is adorable to hear their replies. They are never what you would expect or imagine.
